THUNK In Space radio show will be available to stream here from Midnight 1st April 2026.
D.FOE and THUNK Radio to deliver music homage to Planet Earth on the dark side of the moon with NASA’s Artemis II spaceflight mission
A special THUNK Radio show by the unique music duo D.FOE that explores climate breakdown on Planet Earth from Space is to be played live during NASA’s Artemis II lunar mission.
The one-hour show, THUNK in Space, contains D.FOE’s recognisable sound of samples and loops wrapped around a love story between two satellites that wonder at the fragility of Earth from orbit. The show is dedicated to Artemis II astronaut and D.FOE fan Christina Koch. It is scheduled to play soon after launch on THUNK Radio, with Christina and her fellow astronauts listening to a pre-recorded show aboard the Artemis II as they travel deeper into space than any human has ever achieved.
Christina was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2013. She served as a flight engineer on the International Space Station (ISS) during Expeditions 59, 60 and 61. Koch set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, spending a total of 328 days in space, and participated in the first all-female spacewalk.
This will be the first crewed mission on NASA’s path to establishing a long-term presence at the Moon for science and exploration through Artemis. The 10-day flight will help confirm systems and hardware needed for early human lunar exploration missions.
“Our primary task is observing, observing the moon,” says Koch. “Our job is to tell the scientists back home the things that lunar probes can’t see or tell. And that is, what colors do human eyes see? What observations, large scale, do we see? And we’re being trained to do just that, to describe and observe.”
Christina regularly tunes into D.FOE’s shows, whose sound blends the DIY attitude of punk, the freedom of jazz, hip hop beats and dub roots.
“If I can’t physically go to a different space, because we’re all in the same ‘Hershey kiss’ together, then I can put on my headphones and that’s my way to signal [to the rest of the crew] that I’m in my cabin right now,” says Koch.
D.FOE’s Mark Daniels commented: “We wanted to record a special show for Christina and her fellow astronauts to listen to on their journey to the dark side of the Moon.”
The show is wrapped around an original song written, performed and produced by audio/visual project HUMAN ZERO that D.FOE are involved with alongside TV/Film director Matt Lipsey (BAFTAs for ‘Inside No. 9’ and ‘Little Britain’, currently directing ‘Ted Lasso’) and hit songwriter/producer & contemporary artist Jamie Petrie (JPX), best known for the anthem ‘Things Can Only Get Better’).
Daniels continues: “The concept and song ‘There’s A World Outside My Window’ is a love story between two satellites that meet while floating in the Earth’s orbit. As their digital information entwines in a harmonious embrace, they look down upon a world that worryingly seems to become more fragmented each day. Through a mechanical lens, they observe the negative impact of climate change on an increasingly fragile Earth and ask, ‘Why are they destroying the only home they have?’”
THUNK In Space is exclusive to THUNK.world, the content platform, digital radio station and movement on a mission to better connect people, planet and music.
THUNK’s Mark Fewell said: “We are hugely excited to be part of this project where art meets science and to launch it into outer space. We hope it gets people thinking and talking about this beautiful yet fragile orb we call home and ensure its many wonders are there for generations to come.”
THUNK in Space launched at Bologna’s Artefiera at Fiorintini+Bakers ‘Maker Space’ on 8th February 2026, with an audio-visual installation designed to coincide with the original launch date of 6-11th February, although technical issues prevented it from doing so .
In the former Fonoprint studio, where legends like Lucio Dalla and Vasco Rossi recorded their first albums, Fiorentini+Baker and Galleria Diffusa have created a new "Maker Space," an open community studio designed to foster experimentation and collaboration between musicians, local artists, and the community.
The goal of this alternative space is to identify and cultivate high-quality emerging artists who see art as a tool for contributing to a more just, sustainable, and livable world. It is a space where the community is invited not only to observe art, but also to actively participate in its creation.
For Bologna Art City 2026, Fiorentini+Baker and Galleria Diffusa present a four-day program of events, performances, workshops, and a selection of artists working in various contemporary media. This program combines sculpture, painting, multimedia, photography, music, performance, and scientific dissemination, creating a vibrant and dynamic experience in the heart of the city.
