THUNK in 2026

Extreme weather went next-level: deadly floods, monster tornadoes, and heatwaves that felt like living in a sci-fi dystopia. Meanwhile, political rollbacks in the US and relentless misinformation campaigns engineered by lobbyists on the payroll of fossil fuel giants, far-right media, and AI-generated fake news tried to derail progress, making it harder than ever to separate fact from fiction.

But here’s the twist: clean energy had its breakout year. Renewables and EVs hit a tipping point, cheaper, faster, and more mainstream than ever. Global investment in green tech smashed records ($2.2 trillion!), China’s emissions started to dip, and Brazil’s Amazon deforestation hit an 11-year low. Even the courts got involved, ruling that climate action isn’t just moral, it’s a legal obligation. The vibe? Systemic change is possible, but it’s a race against time and the old guard isn’t going down without a fight.

2026: What’s Next? The stakes are higher. There’s a good chance we’ll pass 1.5°C in the next five years, bringing crop failures, rising seas, and more climate refugees. But the green revolution isn’t slowing down. EVs and renewables are getting cheaper by the month, and public demand for real action is louder than ever.

So, where’s the money? How do we fund this dramatic change when big oil, rogue administrations, and major polluters align behind conspicuous walls of delay, deception and denial? The answer isn’t just in policy, it’s in people power, creative disruption, and making those who got rich exploiting the world’s resources pay to rectify the damage and invest in the planet and people’s futures.
